Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
